How it All Started

My Personal Story:

In 2006, I found myself lying in bed.  I had been diagnosed with an auto-immune deficiency disease called transverse myelitis.  The disease was quickly claiming the use of my legs and moving into the core cavity of my body.   My mind was crazed, wondering what would happen next - as the physicians had no idea whether the disease would continue to progress or reside. There was no treatment offered; drugs were offered to decrease my pain and sedate my manic mind.

Having worked 40 years to become a higher education professor and administrator and having fully engaged in an active life, numbing myself with drugs was not the way I wanted to live. My usual strategy for quieting my mind and reducing stress was running - daily – at least 5 miles followed by an aggressive workout with weights.  However, here I lay barely able to walk ... and panic was beginning to take its hold. But then walked in my beautiful friend, Jan, who taught me about breath awareness - which was growing in importance as breathing was becoming increasingly difficult.  And then
my sister, Elizabeth, sent me two Thich Nhat Hanh books (Living Christ, Living Buddha and Peace is every Step), which introduced me to meditation.

Jan and Elizabeth’s love and compassion, along with several other beautiful souls who then entered my life, began a miraculous transformational journey for my life.

Through my interdependent journey of becoming a full Professor of Postsecondary Educational Leadership at San Diego State University, a yoga teacher trained by Baron Baptiste Power Yoga Institute, a certified Chopra Center meditation teacher,  a practitioner of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Self-Compassion and on the path to becoming a Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute facilitator, I am here to share the lessons that I have learned with you.  Specifically, I offer through the teachings shared by many - specific, manageable, easy to use daily tools that can reduce your stress, increase your well-being, and strengthen your practice of self-compassion and compassion for others.

My life is far from perfect - a constant evolving work environment that is continually losing resources, and a global environment where the only thing that is constant is change - still exist in my life.  So what did yoga and meditation do for me then? 

Come to the Rushing to Yoga workshops, attend an Integrative Inquiry class, and read our books and blogs to find out how I am teaching what I am discovering.
